Lot consists of (A) Philadelphia silver-hilted eagle pommel saber with wide shallow fuller on both sides of slightly curved blade. Silver guard with small trifed quillon. Silver ferrule at base of ebony grip. Hollow Philadelphia eagle head pommel. CONDITION: Blade shows wear and a mottled grey patina. Hilt is tight to blade. Age crack on left side of grip and a couple other minor marks. Silver retains a pewter patina, there is a dent on right side of eagle's beak. (B) Knight's head pommel cavalry saber attributed to Jacob Kucher. For a nearly identical example see page 78 in "American Silver-Hilted, Revolutionary and Early Federal Swords" by Daniel D. Hartzler. The curved blade widens at the clip-point tip, wide, shallow, partial fuller on each side. Both sides of blade are engraved with gilt-washed arms motifs and foliate designs. Large script "US / of / A" on left side of blade. Silver guard and pommel with narrow silver backstrap. Grooved ivory grip. Complete with a period sword knot. CONDITION: Blade shows some wear, nicks to edge and retains a brown patina, some gilt finish left in engraved designs. Guard once had a branch on the right side that was removed or broken off during its period of use. Silver retains a pewter patina with scattered areas of heavier patina. Grip shows some minor chipping, mostly along pommel. A very nice to of patriotic Federal Philadelphia silver hilted cavalry officer's sabers.
