This cavalry saber features an ornate slightly curved blade with wide shallow center fuller on each side. Long shaped blued panels decorated on each side with two etched panels with panoplies of arms and foliate motifs. Top and bottom edges gilded on both sides. Engraved and gilded designs include a large American eagle with "E. PLURIBUS UNUM" banner on the right side and "WARRANTED" towards the ricasso. The left side has a large panoply of arms with liberty cap with floral and foliate motifs alternating between etched panels. The gilt brass hilt features ornate languets both chased with high relief American eagles and repeating ball borders. The reverse-p knucklebow is chased with repeating star designs. Detailed bridled horse head with integral faceted backstrap. High quality bone grip with panels of fluting and gadrooning. Complete with its original gilt brass scabbard. The front is extensively engraved with massive acanthus leaf designs on both sides of the top and middle mounts. In the center is a large American eagle with head turned to the left standing atop an American shield surrounded olive branches. About 12" at bottom above drag are engraved with a large liberty cap on top of a pole and extensive olive branches. Shaped drag. CONDITION: Blade retains about 95-98% original polish towards tip and 80-90% bright blue with some flaking and minor areas turned to plum. Most of gilt wash still present. Some light frosting in etched panels. Hilt retains nearly all of its original gilt finish with some minor wear to highest relief areas. Grip very good with a couple tiny chips along backstrap on left side. Scabbard retains generous amounts of gilt finish, especially in engraved and stippled areas, a couple small shallow dings to back side. A very ornate horse head pommel cavalry saber in excellent overall condition.
