Lot consists of 7 items from 1 Ohio and 6 Pennsylvania political figures: (A) Albert Gallatin 3-pg ALS datelined “Treasury Department Jan. 4th, 1802.” Gallatin (1761-1849) responds to difficulties regarding a treasury certificate. He represented Pennsylvania in both houses of Congress, was appointed Treasury Secretary by Jefferson in 1801, and continued in the post under Madison. He had helped diffuse the Whiskey Rebellion, later negotiated the Treaty of Ghent, and was involved in Native American affairs. CONDITION: Excellent. (B) Signature clip David Wilmot (1814-1868,) Pennsylvania congressman and senator, author of the Wilmot Proviso in 1846, proposing to ban the extension of slavery into any new territory acquired from Mexico and was later involved in the Free Soil Party. CONDITION: Very Good. (C) 1870 ALS on senate stationery by John Scott, US senator from Pennsylvania 1869-1875. In 1870 led congressional inquiry into KKK activities. Responds to correspondent that he had already placed a judge’s opinion in a law case in the hands of members of the judiciary committee. (D) signature of Philander Chase Knox, “PC Knox” on removed flyleaf. Cabinet officer to McKinley, Roosevelt, and Taft, twice US Senator from Pennsylvania, 1904-1909 and 1917-1921. CONDITION: Very good. (E) William E. Crow, signed subpoena as District Attorney. Pennsylvania state senate 1907-1921, US senator 1921-22. CONDITION: Very good. (F) Boies Penrose signed 1902 letter, promising to consider opposition to the “eight-hour bill.” Served in both houses of Pennsylvania legislature and was Pennsylvania senator 1897-1921. (G) Pencil sketch of Nicholas Longworth by M.W. Brown, signed by the artist and by Longworth (1869-1931,) Ohio congressman and Speaker of the House 1925-1931. Married Teddy Roosevelt’s daughter Alice, but split opposed him in 1912. CONDITION: Very good. Gallatin letter comes with a JSA LOA.
