Circa 1840s - 1860s massive American bowie with 12" blade, 17 - 1/2" overall with a 5" false edge. Blade is acid etched "A Friend to Liberty" and "A Foe to Tyranny" on the other side. Possibly spurious "ROSE / NEW YORK" marking on left hand side of blade. One-piece ivory grips with left hand silver escutcheon, German silver throat, and deep fluted clamshell pommel. Quillons on crossguard terminate in ball finials.CONDITION: Very good. Deep pitting, one edge nicks, with blade cracked 2" from tip. Sheath is original with back of silver throat showing a stress fracture.
