Early American Bowie knife attributed to Peter Rose. Although there are other tradesmen of the era in New York named Rose knives such as this specimen are agreed to be made by surgical instrument maker Peter Rose who operated in New York during the 1830s-1840s. The knife boasts a 12" spear point blade that is marked "ROSE / NEW YORK " on the obverse side that might be spurious. The blade exhibits a gray patina with scattered freckling and blemishes throughout its length. Silvered cross guard appears to have shaved quillons and possible had ball quillons at each end. 1-piece checkered wood grip exhibits handling wear and scattered abrasions. The handle is centered between a silvered ferrule and shell-shaped pommel that both exhibit a light patina. Pommel with scattered small dings. 17" overall. CONDITON: Good.
