Massive clip point bowie knife that is an excellent example of George Wolstenholm's craftsmanship. The knife features a 10" clip point blade with 6" false edge. Obverse blade is marked "G. WOSTENHOLM & SON / WASHINGTON WORKS / SHEFFIELD" and the ricasso is marked "IXL". George’s domination of the American market expanded so rapidly that he moved to the larger Washington Works on Wellington Street in 1848, which was the largest cutlery works of its time. The blade remains bright with scattered blemishes. Nickel silvered crossguard exhibits a pleasing patina. Stag grip scales are firmly held in place by 4 pins each, and the obverse features a silvered escutcheon. 14 - 3/4" overall. The knife is complete with its brown leather scabbard that features nickel-silvered mounts. Throat retains its large, round stud. Scabbard body with scuffs and abrasions with gold border and IXL at center. Nice patina to mounts. Gold embellishment is mostly worn away at borders. CONDITION: Good.
