An impressive bowie knife that was crafted by James Rodgers & Co.. Rodgers had made a name for himself producing an array of Bowie-style knives for the domestic English market and for export to the United States. The knife features a large 8 - 3/4" spearpoint blade that is marked with the faint "CAST STEEL BOWIE KNIFE" in circle on obverse and "JAMES RODGERS & CO. / CELEBRATED / MAKE. SHEFFIELD" on ricasso. Blade exhibits scattered marks throughout its length with freckling and a gray patina. Silvered crossguard with ball quillons on each side. Wide ivory grip scales that exhibit a pleasing honey patina with a few hairline cracks. A large escutcheon highlights the obverse grip. Small shell pommel and decorated ferrule at guard with mellow patina. 13 - 1/2" overall. The knife is complete with its original leather scabbard with warping and tears to the body that obscure the tooled scene. Silvered mounts are missing their pins and exhibit a yellow patina. Throat is loose but retains its stud. CONDITION: Good.
