An excellent example of Civil War Confederate "Rebel Steel" in the form of a massive bowie knife. This knife features a large 14 - 1/2" clip point blade with 4 - 1/2" false edge. The blade is unmarked but exhibits faint areas of a file pattern, which are noticable near the ricasso. Iron oval crossguard with pewter ferrule and iron pommel. Large single piece wood grip with a few cracks. Blade and crossguard exhibit a heavy chocolate patina. The knife is complete with its original scabbard, which is the highlight of the piece. Although the scabbard is missing the tip and exhibits heavy wear, the original capture inscription can still be seen. The scabbard reads "Some of the Famous Cold Steel / That we "Yankees" didn't feel" on the obverse and "Found in a deserted Revel Camp / Near Manassas" with the words carved respectively on each side of the leather scabbard by the Union soldier who discovered this knife and claimed it as a war trophy. The scabbard is wide with a tin throat that remains firmly attached to the scabbard body. Scabbard is missing tip and there is a 2" x 1 - 1/2" section missing on the reverse. CONDITION: Relic.
