Mid-18th century. This attractive fowler features a thick-walled round barrel with swamped muzzle and brass half-moon sight. There is a long solid flat rib along the top of barrel with some relief chased designs towards breech, accented with inlaid and stippled gold highlights. Flat banana lockplate with beveled edges and engraving throughout. Ornate chased brass mounts. Full length fruitwood stock with relief designs carved around mounts and barrel tang. Complete with its original/period ramrod. CONDITION: Barrel retains a grey patina. Lock functions well and is in its original flintlock configuration, frizzen bridle screw a modern replacement. Buttplate tang cracked and lower portion of buttplate, below second screw, is missing. Brass mounts retain a pleasing mustard patina. Stock shows some wear and marks from use.
