Circa 1840s - 1850s American made Bowie knife. Measures 14" overall with an 8 - 1/2" blade, and a false edge of 4 - 1/4". Clip point, single edged blade is finely finished, and terminates in a pronounced narrow choil. Left hand side of blade stamped, "M.L. BRADFORD & Co. / BOSTON". One piece antler grips with an 'S' shaped brass acorn finial cross guard over a silver banded bolster. Pommel cap is German silver washer surrounding the tang. Scabbard and frog appear to be period correct with silver throat and tip. A very similar style Boston made, stag gripped knife is pictured on pg. 203 (fig. 24) of R.L. Wilson's "Steel Canvas", 1995. CONDITION: Very good. Blade shows previous polishing with some scattered discoloration remaining.
