Circa 1840s - 1850s Sheffield made Bowie. Overall length 14 3/4" with a 10" clip point blade and a 7" false edge. Ricasso marked "J. LINGARD / PEACROFT / SHEFFIELD". Knife was made by cottage industry cutler John Lingard. Some smaller cutlers and artisans ran blade making businesses out of their homes. This was in stark contrast to larger firms becoming prominent in the Sheffield area. Grip is die-struck German silver with patriotic eagle and shield and floral and grape motifs on the pommel and throat. Two small mother of pearl scales on each side are held in place with two silver pins each. This makes for a very aesthetically pleasing look. Origins scabbard has traces of the original Moroccan leather coating with silver throat and tip. CONDITION: Very Good. Blade shows previous period cleaning with some light scattered pitting visible. Most likely there was an acid etched motif no longer visible. Edge has been sharpened with no prominent nicks.
