Circa 1850s Sheffield made Bowie knife for the California market by Samuel Hancock and Son, Mazeppa Works, 55 Peacroft Sheffield. 15 - 1/4" overall with a 10 - 1/4" clip point blade with a 4" sharpened false edge. Full length acid etch panel reads "GOLD MINERS PROTECTOR" with maker stamp above "SAML HANCOCK / PEACROFT / SHEFFIELD". Ricasso stamped with a horse and reverse riding man "MAZEPPA". Reverse turned "cowhorn" shaped silver crossguard with scales of polished horn with nickel silver trim, pommel, elongated silver shield escutcheon, held in place with 6 silver pins. CONDITION: Very good. Typical cleaning and scattered age discoloration. Edge has been only lightly sharpened with no visible nicks or dings. Blade and scales tight to tang with no wobble.
