Circa 1840s American made Bowie knife by Alfred Hunter of Newark, New Jersey. This is a rare and desirable classic form that is seldom seen. Overall length is 14" with a 9" clip point blade and a 3 - 1/2" false edge. Ricasso is stamped "ALFRED / HUNTER'S / SUPERIOR / CUTLERY". Ribbed nickel silver bolster and stylized dog bone crossguard. Single piece carved ivory grips with shell design near pommel and a left hand silver presentation escutcheon that reads "J.L. Holmes". Scabbard may be later replacement. A similar example can be found on pg. 28 of 'A Sure Defence / The Bowie Knife Book' by Kenneth Button, 1988. CONDITION: Blade shows prior cleaning and sharpening and is now gray overall.
