The factory letter lists this revolver as shipped on December 15, 1881, as a .44/40, barrel length not listed, blue finish, stocks not listed, and factory engraving, shipped to Schoverling, Daly, and Gales, New York. Standard barrel length is 7 - 1/2 ", blue with case color frame and hammer. The smooth one piece ivory stocks were most likely added by dealer. Gun has matching numbers on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, and backstrap. There is a ".44" stamped under the barrel. The loading gate has the assembly number stamp 261. The trigger bow has the ".44 cal." stamp. The left side of barrel has the acid etched panel that reads "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER". Top of barrel has the one line Colt address legend. Left side of frame has the three line patent dates. The ejector head is of the donut style. Gun is factory engraved in about B coverage of standard American bank note scroll with punch dot background. All legends are neatly border engraved. This engraving is in the Helfricht style or that of his shop. CONDITION. Fine. All metal surfaces have toned to a lovely soft patina. The engraving is still crisp. All legends are sharp. Even the fragile etched panel is still quite legible. The action is tight with all four clicks. The rifling is still bold but frosted. The grips have toned and have usual age lines with very little shrinkage.
