Cirac 1904-1925. Dovetail lump barrels with a steel bead front sight on a narrowing, smooth, solid, slightly concave game rib with "W. ATKINSON & SONS, LANCASTER" engraved towards breeches. Light floral strapwork at breeches, with a spring of shaded acanthus at rear of rib. Hidden third bite. Barrel flats with numerous proofs, including nitro proofs for a 2 - 1/2" chambered 12 gauge with nominal .729 IBD in both barrels, proofed at 1 - 1/8 oz shot. Splinter forearm with Anson style plunger release, checkered in point pattern, with shaded scroll engraving on exterior iron. Action flats with view and Nitro proofs. Sidelocks are engraved in traditional English pattern rose and scroll, nicely cut. Automatic safety with "SAFE" inlaid in gold ahead of sliding tab. Double triggers are protected by a trigger guard with long tang, engraved with rose and scroll en suite. Densely grained smokey stock with teardrops behind action, checkered in 2 panels about the wrist with mullered borders. Toeline with vanity plate engraved with initials "BK". Checkered butt. Housed in a leather-wrapped case with cherry red lining partitioned to hold gun while disassembled, and containing accessories including pair snapcaps, oil bottle, pair turnscrews, 2 piece cleaning rod with turned wood jag and mop. Lid with Atkinson trade label, exterior with "B. KAY / YORKS."; presumably the original owner (perhaps he lived in Yorkshire?). CONDITION: Very good as brought back up after reproof. Barrels with virtually all of a later good quality bluing, thinning somewhat towards breeches and muzzles, with scattered handling marks and superficial scratches. Stocks are very good with an extra layer of varnish applied that has softened edges somewhat. Forearm has some reddish hues in the engraving about the plunger. Action is very good, essentially gunmetal grey throughout, with some superficial handling marks, engraving is crisp. Trigger guard is very good with some thinning from hand traffic. Mechanically fine, bores are very good, bright and shiny, with some minor frosting. Ejectors are strong and in time. Case is very good with handling marks throughout, including some scrapes. Accompanied by some consignor research on Atkinson and proof marks.
