A very nice example of a pre-World War I US Navy rear admiral's flag. The flag is constructed of blue wool bunting with two 10 - 1/2" stars at center. The overall measurement of the flag is approximately 77" x 55". Hoist is marked "REAR ADMIRAL No 4 MARE ISLAND SEPT. 04". There is rope at each end of the hoist which would secure the flag to a pole and there are reinforcement patches at each end. The flag presents well with minimal blemishes, however, there are some small holes throughout its construction which are only noticeable up close. Hoist exhibits yellowing. Nice stitching with no major tears. CONDITION: Very good.
