The factory letter states that this gun was shipped on March 10th, 1885, as a .44/40 with a 7 - 1/2" barrel, blue finish, and unlisted stocks to W. R. Schaefer and Sons, Boston, Massachusetts, in a shipment of two guns. The blue finish includes a case color frame and hammer. The standard stocks are one piece varnished walnut. This gun has matching serial numbers on barrel, cylinder, frame, trigger guard, and back strap. The left side of barrel has the acid etched panel "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER". Top of barrel has standard one line barrel address. Left side of frame has three line patent dates. Trigger bow stamped "44CF". This gun has the screw in cylinder rod retaining screw with type 2 ejector head. CONDITION: Fine. There is some bright blue on top of back strap and on forward portion of the trigger guard. There is a flash of dark case color in the frame recesses. Trigger still retains some blue. Balance of metal is a smooth homogenous patina. Legends are crisp. The etched panel has weakened but is all there and legible. Grips are excellent with finish loss at base and usual light impressions. Action indexes with all four clicks. The bore is strong but frosted. A very sharp civilian single action.
