The 1998 Kopec letter states that he could locate no historical record for this serial number, but he does go on to say that, in his opinion, "it is totally original in every respect.". Standard government issued US Cavalry revolver made in 1880. The sub inspector was David Clark. His "DFC" stamp will be found on the base of the barrel, back of cylinder, frame, the base of the right grip panel, and DFC in script on right panel. The proof "P" is stamped on the barrel and cylinder. Matching numbers on barrel, frame, cylinder, trigger guard, and backstrap. The left grip panel has the ordnance inspector cartouche of Lt. Charles C. Morrison and is dated 1880. The top of the barrel bears the one line Colt address legend. The left side of frame is stamped with three line patent dates and "U.S.". Standard blue and case color finish with oil rubbed one piece walnut grips. Screws are fire blue. Hammer is also case colored. CONDITION: Fine. The barrel has butter smooth mix of original blue blending with patina. The housing retains nearly all the blue in protected area with the blue patina blending on outer surface. The back strap has a nice blue patina mix while the front strap has turned. The cylinder has generous blue in the flutes with blue and patina mix on balance. There are flashes of case color on frame recesses as well has some strong color remaining on the hammer. Grips are excellent with usual dings and sharp cartouche. Screws are true with flashes of bright blue. The action is crisp with all four solid clicks. The bore is bright. A very clean and honest example of prime Indian Wars cavalry revolver.
