According to John Kopec, this revolver was manufactured in 1875. The principal sub-inspector was A. P. Casey, along with W.W. Johnson. He could not pinpoint this number. He does note that this revolver falls between numbers 16928 and 17004, which were surveyed to Troop C, 5th Cavalry. This gun is finished in standard blue and case colors with one piece walnut grips. Matching serial numbers. The inspector stamp "J" is found under the barrel, on the cylinder, and on the ejector housing. There is a "P" stamped under the barrel and on the cylinder. The Casey stamp is found on the trigger guard. There is no visible cartouche on the grips and it appears to have been removed. The barrel has the early single line Colt address. The left side of the frame has the early two line patent dates. Gun has the early style donut ejector head. This gun has an inscription on the back strap that reads "B. L. Wooten, Ft. Wingate, N. M. 1877". John calls the validity of this engraving into question and we are in agreement on this subject. Barrel has the correct die break in A (Hartford), and John notes that the cylinder pin has been replaced. CONDITION: Fine. All of the legends are crisp. The barrel and tube are a smooth rich patina with bright blue on top of the housing. The cylinder flutes retain the majority of bright blue with flashes on the trigger guard and back strap. The action is tight with four clicks. The rifling is strong but does have scattered abrasions.
