World War I US Marine Corps recruitment poster by artist Charles Buckles Falls. This is 1 of the 2 known versions of the poster, which were used by the Marine Corps circa 1917 to encourage young men to join their ranks. The U.S. Marine corps emblem, printed in yellow and black, rests on a field of deep green, with the faces of 2 Marines in the upper corners displaying the Marine's signature headgear of the time that provides image to the message: "THIS DEVICE ON HAT OR HELMET MEANS U.S. MARINES FIRST TO FIGHT". It was typical for recruitment offices to use the blank space at bottom to print their local addresses, and this example was used by a recruitment office in Boston, Massachusetts with the green words nicely printed in place. The colors on this poster are striking and well preserved, remaining vibrant. There are 2 small repairs to the lower left corner with some staining around the edges. Scattered blemishes throughout. 1 small break in the glass at the lower left corner. Measures approximately 40" x 27" including the frame. CONDITION: Good.
