22.9cm nagasa, of classic hira zukuri form with iori mune, kuri nakagojiri, and signed in two characters "Yasukiyo". NBTHK Hozon papers to Naminohira Yasuyuki, and specifies Muromachi period. The Naminohira smiths worked out of Satsuma, and their name can be read as "Tides are quiet" or "calm seas", which made them popular with seafarers. With bo-hi and soe-hi, and a fairly calm notare hamon with maru boshi. Blade is somewhat out of polish, but there are areas of what appear to be masame hada and chikei, hamon with visible sunagashi. Two piece habaki, with shakudo top and gold foil wrapped copper bottom with catscratch and relief decorations. Small tsuba of shakudo with relief gold flowers. Fuchi with relief gold paulownia crests on a nanako ground, kashira with waves. Menuki are in the form of pine trees, with gilt tops, a motif which is repeated on kozuka and kogai. Saya of a fine pine needle lacquer with florals throughout. Sayajiri with carved waves and what appears to be stylized suns. Kurikata with relief plum blossoms, kaerizuno with insects. CONDITION: Blade is out of polish with some spots of fine ware and mossing; an infintesimal chip is missing from kissaki. Mounts are very good with some normal handling marks and age, with some heavier rubs to nanako on fuchi. Saya with two cracks under kozuka slot, approximately 3", with some chipping and lifting at extremities.
