Produced from 1865 to 1866 to fulfill an 1864 15,000 gun Civil War contract, most were returned to Remington in 1870 and resold to France for use in the Franco-Prussian War. Standard blued 20" barrel with blade front sight and 2-leaf rear. Early split breech style rolling block action finished by case hardening and furnished with a saddle ring and bar. Walnut carbine forend retained by a single barrel band. Plain walnut stock and "US" carbine butt plate marked on the left with a boxed script "CGC" cartouche for inspector C.G. Chandler. CONDITION: Very good to fine. Barrel finish has faded to mottled gray patina. Receiver displays significant portions of muted case colors with brown spotting and remnants of protective coating. Some screw heads retrain traces of nitre blue. Stocks are very good retaining their original surfaces with a sharp cartouche and some expected dings and finish loss. Very fine, bright and shiny bore. Crisp mechanics. A nice example of a very scarcely encountered Civil War era US martial arm.
