Manufactured in 1863 at the height of the Civil War, this example is richly finished example features Gustave Young floral accented and punch dot shaded foliate scroll engraving with characteristic wolf heads on each side of the hammer and "E" serial number suffixes. Barrel is finished in classic polished blue with New York address and German silver blade front sight. 6-shot percussion cylinder rollmarked with the naval engagement scene. Engraved, silver plated grip straps. Grips are highly attractive 1-piece checkered ivory. Revolver is housed in a green-lined partitioned hardwood case with Colt's patent mold and Eley cap tin. CONDITION: Fine. Barrel retains the vast majority of its bright factory blue, starting to fade on the top and right, with some cleaned oxidation on the left side of the muzzle. Cylinder faded to gray patina with a largely legible cylinder scene. Traces of case color displayed on frame and hammer. Engraving is crisp throughout. Traces of silver retained in the protected areas of the grip fame, the balance exhibiting a mellowing golden patina. Grips have a rich, creamy patina. Fine, strong and bright bore. Crisp mechanics. Matching numbers observed throughout. Loading lever a possible replacement. Case has a split on the lid and some other minor handling marks. A wonderful, scarce Young engraved 1861 Navy that displays very well.
