An improvement over earlier Bergmann designs, only around 4,000 of these magazine-fed concealable semi-automatic pistols were produced circa 1901 to 1903. This example is finished in attractive rust blue and luxuriously engraved with finely line shaded, deep vine and foliate engraving. Standard tapered round barrel with rib and half moon front sight tastefully engraved around the muzzle and breech, proofed with a double crown over "U". The rich panel engraving extends from the barrel rib onto the receiver with significant coverage. Reviver also proofed with a double crown over "U" and marked "PAT." on the left. As is seen on known factory engraved examples, the straw trigger, hammer, and safety are also lightly engraved. Grips are standard wrap-around hard rubber, checkered with "Simplex" in script on each side. Grip cap is relief engraved with the initials "PS" very tastefully incorporated into foliates. CONDITION: Fine. Pistol retains the vast majority of its rich blued finish with freckling and some mild toning. Strong straw colors displayed on the hammer and safety, the trigger also retaining strong traces. Grips have only mild handling marks. Heavily frosted, worn bore. Fine mechanics. A remarkably attractive and rare early European semi automatic pistol. A fine addition to any collection of such arms.
