A fantastic example of a Will & Finck all steel, double edged, bowie knife with a large 7" spearpoint blade which forms into a wide ricasso that also functions as a crossguard. The ricasso is marked "WILL & FINCK / S.F. CAL.". This California knife maker needs no introduction to collectors, as their cutlery is highly desired by passionate enthusiasts. The blade exhibits great amounts of its original cross graining with scattered blemishes throughout. An older, light cleaning is exhibited on the blade. Handle is steel and wrapped with heavy twine that remains tight to the knife. Pommel is checkered on all sides and smooth on the top. Overall length is 13". The knife is housed in a brown leather scabbard that perfectly accommodates the impressive blade. The leather has formed around the shape of the wide ricasso, even the side that is flared, suggesting that they have been together for quite some time. Line engravings decorate the front of the scabbard and the belt loops remain intact. The scabbard exhibits tight stitching and remains pliable with a few scuffs from handling and wear. Light creasing by the belt loop. This knife is pictured on page 120 of "California's Best" as well as page 16 in "Knife Makers of Old San Francisco" in which it is described as once belonging to "a Pacific Coast sea-captain". This is a fantastic example of a documented Will & Finck knife that would be nearly impossible to upgrade. CONDITION: Very good.
