An attractive example of a federal period knight head sword with Rhode Island history. This sword was presented to William Gibbs, 10th Governor of Rhode Island. Gibbs would go on to present the sword to his son in 1871, and it would be passed to his grandson in 1884, and his great-grandson in 1903. Their names are engraved on the scabbard. The sword features a spearpoint blade that is etched with foliate and patriotic motifs for about half its length on both sides. Marked "N.P. Ames / Cutler / Springfield". Blade exhibits scattered areas of pitting especially at the tip. Wide crossguard with shell languets with the obverse languet reading "HOPE" in a banner above an anchor. Silver grip with beautifully engraved designs. Knight head pommel with triple chain guard. Nice amounts of gilding remain on the hilt with patina to grip. Complete with its original gilded brass scabbard with patriotic and foliate engraved obverse and decorated stud. Reverse features the Ames maker mark contained in a raised scroll. Scabbard retains traces of its original gilding with a nice patina and scattered blemishes. CONDITION: Good.
