The first American military longarm, the Model 1795, was copied from this French Model 1766/68 musket. Of standard configuration with partially visible crown over "D" on left side of breech. Lockplate marked "US" deeply at tail and inscribed "Charleville" in center along with a partially visible star over "D", indicating 1768 modifications. Standard 1766/68 iron furniture. Walnut stock stamped on left side of buttstock "D" for Charleville arsenal. Bottom of buttstock branded "U STATES" behind triggerguard tang. Left side carved with initials "S + M". Complete with a later French ramrod. CONDITION: Barrel has an applied brown finish, as does the lock. Lock markings are faint but "US" is strong. Some of the furniture also has an applied brown finish. Stock shows typical wear and has scattered marks from use and minor splinters along barrel. There are 14 round 1/4" holes that have been with inlaid round wood inlays, perhaps where tacks had been. One in front of buttplate tang, 4 in a star in center of right side of buttstock and the rest on both sides and on top of wrist, as well as one behind lock and one behind sideplate. These are not structural repairs. A historic American-used Revolutionary War musket.
