This is an interesting gun in that the engraved side lock action is marked "J. SQUIRES", who was in business from 1880-1892. It is now fitted to a set of 28" Nitro proof barrels that are stamped "G.E. LEWIS", also of Birmingham. We can only surmise that a previous owner took his gun to Lewis and had a pair of more modern Nitro barrels fitted to his action. Barrel numbers do not match and are multi-proofed. The action is finely engraved with exposed hammers. Also features double triggers. Checkered walnut stock with a straight grip and a gutta percha butt plate. The splinter forearm is stamped Squires and matches the frame serial number. Barrels are both choked Modified. Comes with leather case that has a broken handle. PROVENANCE: Ex. Bill Wise. CONDITION. Excellent. Gun is tight. Barrels retain 80% blue with no visible dents. Frame has turned a soft gray. Trigger guard appears re-blued. Stock is excellent with bold grain with usual impressions. Forearm has a small 1 - 1/4" sliver missing but is still with the gun. Bores are bright. Action works fine.
