Manufactured circa 1874 in standard configuration for use by the United States Government. Desirable early features include italicized single line barrel address complete with serifs on either side, and early ejector rod housing with barrel reinforcement stud. Marked on left side of frame with 2 line patent date as well as "U.S." in small block font. Marked with O.W. Ainsworth's "A" inspector marking on barrel, trigger guard, top of backstrap near hammer, and cylinder. Mounted with factory 1 piece walnut grips with matching serial number on the interior of the backstrap. Left grip panel is marked with faint "OWA" inspector cartouche. CONDITION: Very good, with nearly all of the original finish turned an honest freckled gray patina with factory bluing still visible in well-protected areas such as barrel underneath ejector rod housing, ejector rod housing with the exception of the rounded outside, trigger guard, and on frame near hammer. Faint original case colors are visible on recoil shield, mostly concentrated on rear of recoil shield, hammer, and inside of loading gate. Grips have been lightly cleaned with outside edges of cartouche visible, although faint. Heavy handling marks near butt of grip. Action is tight and crisp with all 4 hammer stops. Bore is frosted with visible rifling. A desirable early Cavalry revolver in nearly untouched condition.
