With an investment from Oliver Winchester, the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. took over the production of Volcanic arms from Smith and Wesson in 1855 and continued production until 1857 when the New Haven Repeating Arms Co. was formed. The firm produced an estimated 1,200 6" Belt Model Navy pistols during this period. This example is stamped with the 3-line Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. address on the barrel flat, and is fitted with a small blade front sight and drift adjustable V-notch rear. Iconic square butt brass frame without plating. Grips are smooth varnished rosewood. Matching numbers observed on the frame, lever, and on the inside of each grip panel. CONDITION: Very good overall. Barrel displays a brown gray patina with some added finish, high edge wear, and handling marks. Address is largely legible. Frame exhibits a golden mellowing patina with scattered dings and nicks. Lever and hammer have largely faded to brown with some faint case color patterning. Grips have a rich, aged appearance with impressions as well as a repaired split at the left toe. Grips fit somewhat poorly but do appear original to the gun. Bore is strong but shows some black powder abrasion. Gun has hammer follow, otherwise mechanics are very good.
