Classic carbine length round barrel with 2-line Winchester address, barrel band front sight, and 2-position carbine rear. Brass saddle ring receiver engraved with flowing foliate scrolls over punch dot backgrounds, the left side featuring the Mexican Coat of Arms, depicting an eagle with snake in mouth mounted on a cactus. Mexican eagles were very popular motifs on factory engraved 1866s, with many known in the 30,000 and 40,000 serial number range. Lever appears to be a replacement. Walnut carbine forend and unumbered straight grip walnut stock which appears to be a period replacement. Reinforced brass 1866 crescent plate with trap. CONDITION: Good. Barrel and magazine tube display rich brown patinas with freckled surfaces. Brass exhibits an attractive mottled mellow golden patina, some areas starting to darken. Lower tang has a period repair. Forend has some light impressions and a split at the nose. Stock likewise shows saddle ring wear with impressions throughout, as well as a few kill notches near the saddle ring. Dark oxidized bore. Good mechanics. One action screw is missing. An attractive engraved carbine with desirable Mexican eagle motif.
