Dated Bunka 6 (1810), and signed "Motonaga Tsukuru Kore" (Motonaga made this), verified by NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers. Highly unusual wakizashi in yoroi doshi configuration, with a gigantic 12.3mm kasane. Per Sesko's Index of Japanese Swordsmiths, Motonaga was a student of the 7th generation Owari Nobutaka, Ozaki Suketaka, and Satsuma Motohira; after he completed all three trainings he changed his name to Motonaga, see pg. 407. Hira zukuri configuration with iori mune, kuri nakagojiri with kesho yasurime, and a ko-maru boshi on ura with nie-kuzuri on omote. Kaeri is very long, with muneyaki as far as 24cm down the mune. Horimono are a suken with stylized tsume on omote, and ho-bi and soe-bi on ura. One piece gold foil habaki with vertical catscratching. Jihada is largely muji, mixed with some areas of mokume with some whispers of masame, and is covered in ji nie. Hamon is nie deki midare, with a wide nioguchi. In a shirasaya. CONDITION: Excellent, in excellent polish, showing features throughout, with one very small blemish on omote kissaki and a few pinprick openings. Shirasaya very good. An excellent sword of unusual configuration.
