18,065 manufactured by Eli Whitney, Sr. under two contracts, one July 18, 1812 and the other in 1822. Round barrel with bayonet lug at muzzle on top and stamped on left side of breech with oval sunken "P". The flat lockplate is stamped "N. HAVEN" in a banner, and fit with brass pan and reinforced cock. Standard Model 1812 iron furniture. Walnut stock stamped with inspectors cartouche "JN" behind the sideplate, possibly for John Newbury. A large "D" is stamped behind the trigger guard tang. Brass collection tag stamped "79 / C.M.P." hangs from the front sling swivel. PROVENANCE: Edward J. Altemeier, Cleveland, Ohio, 1951. CONDITION: Barrel mostly bright with some darker patina at muzzle and light pitting throughout. Lock very good in its original flintlock configuration and functions well, crisp. Markings excellent throughout. Iron furniture shows some light pitting. Stock mostly good, some scattered storage marks and denting, as well as a splinter missing on left side of barrel tang.
