Circa 1849. Blued rammerless 6" octagon barrel stamped with the bracketed 2-line New York address. 5-shot cylinder with oval stops and roll stamped stagecoach holdup scene. Standard "COLTS / PATENT" marked case hardened frame. Silver plated brass square back trigger guard and grip straps. Grips are smooth 1-piece walnut. Housed in a very scarce and desirable red crushed velvet lined fitted Paterson style hardwood case with beveled lid. A brass 2 cavity Colts Patent mold with greasing grooves, correct early eagle motif Colts Patent powder flask, and Eley cap tin are also included. CONDITION: Excellent. Barrel retains approximately 95% of its original blued finish with high edge wear and other marks. Cylinder finish has faded somewhat with oxidation spots. Cylinder scene is crisp and largely legible. Strong and attractive case colors displayed on the frame. Grip straps likewise retain the vast majority of their plating, giving way to golden brass on the center of the back strap and high edges. Grips are fine with some minor impressions. Very fine, bright bore. Crisp mechanics. Matching numbers observed throughout. Case is also very fine with some expected finish loss and wear. Liner displays good color, some fading present where in contact with the gun and accoutrements. A very fine set that displays exceedingly well.
