Great example of a complete Vietnam War Special Forces Gerber fighting knife. The Gerber knife was one of the most coveted and sought after weapons by all Special Forces members, as these knives were one of the best fighting knives used during the Vietnam War. Gerber knives were basically an updated version of the Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife and were produced by the Gerber factory. Each knife featured a cast aluminum handle, which made these knives ideal as they would not deteriorate in the unpleasant conditions of Vietnam's tropical jungle climate. The thin stiletto blade features a weighted front end that is razor sharp on the edges. The ricasso is marked with the Gerber knife-in-stone logo and "GERBER / PORTLAND, ORE. U.S.A." The reverse ricasso is marked with the original issue number "013384" which denotes 1969 manufacture. The Green Beret who carried this knife etched his service number on the reverse ricasso as well. The knife is complete with the original leather scabbard that is marked "GERBER / Portland Ore. U.S.A." with sharpening steel in the front pouch CONDITION: The blade retains its bright polished finish and exhibits scattered scratches and blemishes including scattered areas of light freckling. The handle retains most of its original black and gray finish with scattered areas of loss. Leather scabbard remains pliable tight stitching. The scabbard exhibits scuffs and handling marks as well as some tarnishing. Very good.
