The lowest known serial number for a Krag carbine with 1895 date stamp is 25,293 and the lowest serial number for those stamped 1896 is 31,444. This is a very early serial number showing all the first model parts such as the C stamped carbine 1st type 1896 rear sight used on all 1895 dated examples. It also has the early short handguard with the early type sight protector barrel band. This carbine falls just outside the 1st Cavalry Rough Riders serial range (27010-28995) but was probably in Cuba with another unit at that time as the majority of early 1895 dated carbines made their way overseas. The walnut stock has the JSA 1896 Joe Porter inspection cartouche on left side with script P under wrist. (faint but legible) Standard features such as the saddle ring and plate, pinned blade on base front sight, smooth trap door butt plate and the blue and case color factory finish with fire blue small parts & extractor. CONDITION: Fine. All the case colors have darkened and patterned out. The fire blue parts have also dulled and darkened. The protective barrel band retains some bright blue as does the band retaining spring. The barrel blue is a smooth blend of blue and patina. All of the frame legends are crisp. The stock is sharp with usual scattered impressions. The hand guard has a 2" stress crack at top. Action is typical smooth as butter. Bore is bright.
