Based on armorer Erskine Allin's design approximately 25,000 these trapdoor conversions were built circa 1866 from musket parts. The original 1865 dated musket barrel is fitted with a blued 1866 dated and eagle head marked breech block. Standard bayonet lug front sight and 2-leaf rear. Case hardened 1864 dated Springfield lock and hammer with 2-click tumbler. Full length walnut stock marked on the left flat with a script "ESA" Erskine Allin cartouche. Classic bright finished musket mounts. Complete with leather sling. CONDITION: Excellent. Bright barrel, starting to develop areas of light brown patina. Breech block retains nearly all of its arsenal finish. Lock plate likewise displays strong and attractive case colors, some fading present on the hammer with a few older oxidation spots. Stock appears lightly cleaned, some expected dings and abrasions present. Strong, bright bore with some imperfections near the muzzle. Crisp mechanics. Sling is very good. An outstanding example.
