Designed by armorer Erskine Allin as the first of the trapdoor rifles, 5,000 of these conversions were produced around 1865 from Civil War musket parts. The original "64" dated bright finished barrel has been arsenal fitted with Allin's blackened trapdoor breech block allowing it to fire .58 RF ammunition. Standard bayonet lug front sight and 2-leaf rear sight. Standard "1862" dated Springfield musket lock with 2-click tumbler. Full length walnut stock marked on the left with a script "ESA" Erskine Allin cartouche marked at the time of conversion, as well as a faint earlier cartouche. Standard bright hardware. Complete with an original leather sling. CONDITION: Very fine. Metal is bright and clean with some mild areas of light patina and strong markings. Breech block retains the majority of its blackened finish. Stock has handling marks throughout and an added coat of finish with a solvent line on the right side. Fine, bright bore. Crisp mechanics. Sling has some surface crackling from age but remains intact. A very nice example for the discerning collector.
