Just 341 M1870 trapdoor carbines were manufactured for trials by Springfield during the second quarter of 1871, with an additional 20 carbines built for officers in the last quarter of the year. Carbine is bright finished with a correctly unproofed barrel with brass blade front sight and 700-yard graduated ladder rear sight. High arch breech block dated "1870" over an eagle head, crossed arrows, and "US". Standard "1863" dated Springfield musket lock with 2-click tumbler. Walnut carbine stock mounted with a single barrel band without stacking swivel, saddle ring bar, 2-piece trigger guard, and "US" marked butt plate. CONDITION: Good. Metal displays a bright patina as cleaned long ago with some minor areas of cleaned oxidation and protective coating. Stock likewise has been lightly sanded and reoiled with scattered impressions and a few larger dings. A repaired split is present on the left side of the wrist. Bright and strong bore with well defined rifling and some light cleaned oxidation spots. Crisp mechanics. A very hard to find trapdoor carbine.
