There is speculation that swords in mount sof this type were quickly put together for use during the Satsuma Rebellion led by Saigo Takamori against the Meiji government, but there is some speculation that they may have just been loaner swords. 45.2cm nagasa (approximately 17 - 3/4") of shinogi zukuri form. Nakago with kuri jiri, ubu, mumei, and a single mekugi-ana. Copper habaki with incised design of falling rain. Iron tsuba with carved designs , a silver stork,, and what what look like posts in silver with gold tassels. Plain iron fuchi, aluminum kashira with enamel paint; menuki only on one side in the form of a rope (?). CONDITION: Blade has mossing and superficial scratches throughout, and some chipping around monouchi. Out of polish. Mounts with some oxidation and rubs throughout.
