31" octagon to round barrel is marked " j. PURDEY 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET LONDON" Beginning in 1826, they operated from 314 ½ Oxford Street — the former premises of James’s previous employer, Joseph Manton where they built the highest quality firearms through 1881. This percussion fowler features a browned Damascus barrel, bead front sight, classic English style checkered pistol grip walnut half stock with engraved grip cap, trigger guard, lock, upper tang and hammer. The steel butt plate is also engraved. The stock also features a roll over cheek piece and ebony fore-end tip. Also includes a piano finish wood rod with brass tip. CONDITION. Excellent. Fine 90% factory browned finish on barrel. The fading case color lock is also stamped Purdey. The wood has hand rubbed oil finish, sharp checkering, with usual minor scattered impressions. Action functions correctly. Bore is bright. Seldom seen high quality and condition English fowler.
