Lot consists of: (A) Second Type M1881 pattern holster, which is similar to the first type, except with a slightly larger belt loop as it was to be used on the "Cavalry Belt", also known as the Sherman Belt, Metcalf Belt, or M1882 Pistol Belt. This example is complete with the brass finial, plug, and intact belt loop. Front of body is embossed with "US" in oval. Flap is marked "U.S. / ARSENAL / BENICIA" with "RWH" inspector mark. Body is smooth with scattered blemishes and remains supple. CONDITION: Very good. (B) Fifth Type 1881 pattern holster with enlarged belt loop for accommodation with the Mills double loop woven cartridge belt. Only 3064 examples of this holster were produced at the Rock Island Arsenal. The holster is properly marked "ROCK ISLAND / ARSENAL" with inspector mark "E.H.S.". Tight seams with intact plug and other components. Unit marked "G31". Crazing throughout and supple overall. This holster is featured on page 115 of US Military Holsters and Related Accoutrements by Edward Scott Meadows. CONDITION: Good.
