The 1878/79 holster was manufactured at the Watervliet Arsenal and links the M1875 swivel holster and the M1881 holster. This example features a large flap with US in oval embossed diagonally instead of horizontally. The holster is complete with all components including the plug, flap, strap, and rivets. Securing strap is stitched and riveted to the flap. Belt loop is intact and riveted to body by 3 rivets. All stitching remains tight and the holster body remains sturdy and supple. Light crazing throughout its length with wear on the securing strap. The remains of the AR Smith inspector stamp is slightly legible on the strap. Originally black, the holster has faded to brown because of the vegetable tanned leather. A very nice example of a rare Indian Wars holster that remains intact. CONDITION: Good.
