The 1872 pattern holster is an extensively modified Civil War holster that was altered at the Watervliet Arsenal. Constructed of black bridle leather the holster features a Hoffman swivel that attaches the belt loop to the body. The brass swivel allows the holster to pivot in a 360 degree circle. The 1872 pattern holster also features an interesting attachment in the form of a wiping rod pocket that is riveted to the side of the holster. A cleaning rod is included with this holster, which is complete with plug and functioning flap. Most, but not all of these holsters feature an embossed "US" on the flap, however this example is blank. There are also no visible arsenal markings. The holster remains sturdy and pliable with light crazing throughout its length. This is an excellent example of an intact, rare Indian Wars holster.
