Seldom seen M1872 regulation cavalry folding campaign hat. Often said that this is one of the scarcest pieces of federal regulation headgear, this style hat was worn by both officers and enlisted men during the Great Sioux War of 1876. Historians associate this pattern hat with Custer's troopers during the Battle of Little Bighorn in June 1876. Manufactured by Pettibone under a US Government contract, these have a very limited survival rate due to their limited popularity, fragility of the design, material of the hat, and the harsh conditions in which they were used. CONDITION: Shows commensurate period wear overall with the black grosgrain band around the base of the crown present but has come undone at the front. The four japanned metal hooks are in place, with the thin leather sweatband present but coming unstitched in numerous sections.
