During the Civil War, one of the most invaluable items a soldier carried on campaigns was the "gum" rubber blanket. The Union purchased or made 1,893,007 of these blankets between 1860-1866 for every soldier. They were among the first items given to a recruit and were treasured by troops who used them as protection against the elements. These blankets measured 70" x 60" and featured brass eyelets on the outer edges. Manufacturers used cotton for the substrate and then coated it with rubber. This example measures approximately 70" x 44" and has been subject to shrinkage. There are several small holes and repairs throughout its construction but it appears that all brass grommets are in place. There are stains throughout with some areas of flaking on the rubber side. This example also features its original inspector stamp that reads "H.S. McCOMS / MILITARY INSPECTOR" in red ink. Consigner states that this blanket was used to wrap a Civil War musket that was purchased at Bannerman's castle in 1959. CONDITION: Fair.
