One of 600 produced with a 36" barrels and saber bayonet lugs for an Egyptian contract in the 36,000 to 40,000 serial number range. These rifles however never made it to Egypt and were issued to Connecticut troops during the Civil War. The extra length barrel is correctly marked "NEW MODEL 1859" at the breech and is fitted with a German silver blade front sight and Lawrence patent ladder rear. Action appears to have originally been blued, as is commonly seen on these contract rifles, although it is now faded to patina. Extra long walnut forend retained mounted with 3 spring retained barrel bands. Stock has no visible inspector cartouche and is fitted with an iron patch box and butt plate. The initials "TJ" within a triangle are carved into the left side. Rifle is accompanied by a well fitting yataghan bayonet with ribbed brass hilt. CONDITION: Very good. Metal has turned a pleasing rich plum brown patina throughout with evidence of older oxidation. Stocks have a nice age darkened appearance with expected wear, dings, and nicks. A 4 - 1/2" partially repaired split runs up the center of the forend from the action. Bore is strong but shows evidence of black powder usage. Fine mechanics. Bayonet has some spots of cleaned oxidation and a contemporary wire repaired catch spring. A very scarce Civil War Sharps.
