Overall length: 57”. Barrel length: 41 – ½”. The signature on this rifle’s barrel is “A. Myer”, undoubtedly a gunsmith in the region of Snyder-Union County, PA, working in the second decade of the 19th Century. This rifle has all of the classis features of that region, such as the fully pierced patchbox, the graceful “Roman-nose” buttstock, the incised cheekpiece carving with the ribbed leafage, the crescent silver moon on the cheekpiece, a forestock “wear-plate”, and the unmistakable two-piece rear ferrule. There are 14 silver inlays, all original except one, on the underside of the stock. The quality of the engravings (and its pattern) are extremely fine. The beautiful curly maple (finely figured) stock has a dry surface which has a deep reddish-brown color. The full octagonal barrel still has very deep rifling, not often found. This rifle is highly attractive and visually eye-appealing. The lock has been re-converted back to its former flintlock status, using an original “re-shoed” Frizzen trigger. Only two metal replacements occur; one is a small piece added to the lower rear extension of the patchbox sideplate, and the silver inlay on the underside of the buttstock is a replacement. The top flats of the barrel have been lightly cleaned.
