Overall length: 56 – ½”. Barrel length: 40”. This Kentucky rifle is signed on its octagonal barrel “S.L” for Samuel Loudenslager, who worked in Snyder County, PA in the first and second quarter of the 19th Century. Even if it were unsigned, the rifle is easily identifiable, as Loudenslager was quite repetitive in his work. The brass patchbox has his typical pierced finial and engraving on the lid, while his incised “clam-shell” cheekpiece-covering is the same as he used throughout his career. Also, the brass lock-bolt plate with its “buckhorn” cutouts is one of his classic signatures. This slender rifle’s stock is original throughout and also has a pleasing curly-maple figure as well as a nice mellow finish. The lock plate has been re-converted and is marked “Rogers Brothers & Co., Philadelphia”.
