Circa 1895 to 1910. Beautifully designed letter opener with a continuous geometric pattern on the handle with a ship and whale's tail on the handle pommel. There is a bead shaped bolster where the blade meets the handle. The blade is attached to the handle with hand filed threads, the leaf shaped blade was definitely scrimmed for the sailors wife or fiance. Depicts a harpooning whale scene on one side and an especially beautiful ribbon scroll that forms interlocking hearts and two doves holding ribbon in their beaks as if they tied the ribbon. Appears to never have been used.

Condition: (Very Good).

Item Dimensions: 7 - 1/2" L.
SPERM WHALE TOOTH LETTER OPENER.
